PROJECT: | Expansion and office interior design at Sanofi Aventis plant |
CLIENT: | Sanofi Aventis |
COMPLETION: | 2006 |
LOCATION: | Karachi, Pakistan |
CATEGORY: | Industrial |
DETAIL: | The project came into being as a result of the client’s requirement for increased seating capacity for the department. Earlier, the pharmaceutical company had tried to tackle this problem by extending the floor slab, but this engineering solution did not yield enough space to fulfill the requirements. Sanofi Aventis decided to engage an architect to come up with a creative solution to the problem. Architect concept for the design was ‘Articulated Negative Spaces’. The project has varied shapes and forms of spaces dictated by the requirements. The joined spaces are put together, such that fluidity and continuity of negative spaces can be attained. In a two level design, each part is defined precisely and stands out clearly. The Industrial Affairs department is responsible for all activities related to production, from purchase of materials to handing over the finished product to the sales department. The offices were situated in the plant building and surrounded by the production areas which are rough and mechanical. The design is hence highly robust and functional, to blend in with the internal environment, while at the same time comfortable enough to serve as a productive office. It combines exposed concrete surfaces and Italian office furniture. To top it all, the project was executed within a limited budget, which was skillfully managed by the architects. According to the client, the simple materials used in the design make it easy to maintain the working environment in its original condition. The salient features of the design, from the client’s perspective, are:
The project was inaugurated in 2005 and received Honorable Mention at the IAP awards in 2009. |
